Spike O’Sullivan to fight “Big Name” in Golovkin-Canelo Rematch Chief Support

Spike O’Sullivan [28(20)-2(1)] is one win away from a shot at the middleweight world title but will need to get through a major player in the division to achieve it.

The Cork middleweight fights in the chief support bout on the Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez rematch card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday September 15th.

The fight is seen as a gateway, a de-facto final eliminator, to the winner of the main event but O’Sullivan will not face a soft opponent tailored to make him look good.

An opponent has been secured for the Mahon 33-year-old and, while the name has not been revealed yet, coach and manager Paschal Collins promises that it is a huge fight.

The Celtic Warriors Gym boss told BoxingScene that “all I can say is Spike is going to fight a big name in September, a well-known lad who can fight.”

O’Sullivan burst onto the world scene in December just gone with an impressive seventh-round upset stoppage win over touted American Antoine Douglas in Montreal. The victory secured the Irishman a deal with Golden Boy Promotions which was subsequently improved during the Golovkin-Canelo postponement saga.

However, Collins feels his unnamed opponent on September 15th is a tougher test than Douglas.

The Cabra coach described how “outside of Billy Joe Saunders and Eubank Jr I think Spike’s next fight is going to be his toughest test to date, cannot confirm who it is but it will excite the real boxing fans with the Mexican Style.”

“There is lots of talk about Spike fighting a number of different people for numerous different belts, but right now Golden Boy Promotions and Murphys Boxing are putting together a plan that we believe will be the best road to take both in profile of fights and financially.”

Plenty of names have been linked with O’Sullivan recently, with Brazilian Olympian and Golden Boy stablemate Yamaguchi Falcao going as far as to call the Leesider out.

Another Golden Boy stablemate, former champ David Lemieux, has been continually mentioned, with Gabe Rosado another that would fit the bill.
