Spike O’Sullivan targets Munguia-Hogan winner

Kildare’s Dennis Hogan will challenge WBO light middleweight champion Jaime Munguia at some stage in the coming months and he won’t be the only Irishman in the picture.

Spike O’Sullivan is looking to rebuild at light middleweight and the Cork character has promised that he will be ringside to challenge the winner.

Mexican Munguia successfully defended his brown 154lbs belt for the third time at the weekend, dominating Japan’s Takeshi Inoue in Houston – although looking somewhat sluggish in comparison to previous performances.

A move up in weight had been mooted, but the Zanfer-Golden Boy youngster has pledged to stay at light middle and must face Hogan next.

The Brisbane-based Irishman has revealed that there are a number of possible locations for the fight – including in Ireland – however, a high-profile undercard slot on the Canelo Alvarez v Danny Jacobs middleweight unification bill on May 4th looks likeliest.

No venue for this fight has been confirmed but it is expected that the WBA-WBC-IBF unification will play out in Las Vegas and, with it taking place on Cinco De Mayo Weekend, Canelo’s fellow Mexican and potential future foe Munguia would look to be a solid bet for the undercard.

O’Sullivan, like Canelo and Munguia, is promoted by Golden Boy and is currently on the comeback trail at light middleweight.

The Mahon 34-year-old boxs on Saturday March 16th at the House of Blues in Boston in an eight-round contest and will then look to claim a rankings belt with the WBO to move into frame as a potential voluntary defence for the Munguia-Hogan winner.

Hogan’s promoter, DDP’s Paul Keegan, had already suggested O’Sullivan as the ideal first defence back home in Ireland should ‘The Hurricane’ dethrone Munguia and the Brisbane-based Dublin fight boss reacted positively to Spike’s statement of intent.

Hogan and O’Sullivan have sparred in the past, share a lot of respect, and would seem to be an easily-made fight at home or as a big event in Brisbane. Similarly, considering their promotional link, Munguia would also be a fight which could be made with minimal fuss – perhaps on a big Mexican Independence Day Weekend card in mid-September.
