Spike O’Sullivan Fight OFF – Big Opportunity secured

Spike O’Sullivan [30(21)-3(2)] will not fight this weekend but there are big plans in the pipeline for the Cork light middleweight.

The Mahon man was due to keep busy on Friday night on a Murphys Boxing show at the Encore Casino in Boston. O’Sullivan was scheduled to face Argentine journeyman Diego Adrian Marocchi live on UFC Fight Pass but it has been announced today that the eight-round contest has been cancelled.

Last-minute visa issues have scuppered O’Sullivan’s plans but, thankfully, it looks like the Leesider will still progress and manager and trainer Paschal Collins has revealed that there are big plans afoot.

The Celtic Warriors Gym boss explained how “the US consulate at the last minute has requested more information on Spike which means Spike might or might not be in Boston in time for his fight.”

“His visa application proved complicated even though he has already had three successful visas in the past.”

“Rather than risk arriving in the States too close to the fight and more importantly taking Spike’s health into consideration, we have been offered a new fight deal with Golden Boy Promotions and Murphys Boxing.”

“The first big fight happening in October this year and, if successful, followed by a world title fight.”

“October fight date will be announced soon.”

O’Sullivan secured an initial deal with Golden Boy following his upset win over Antoine Douglas in December 2017. This package was then increased after a potential fight with Gennady Golovkin last year fell through.

Following a stoppage loss to David Lemieux, O’Sullivan embarked on a move down in weight and is now chasing honours in the light middleweight division.

The 34-year-old, who scored a good win over Khiary Gray last time out, is currently unranked by the four major bodies but this is expected to change soon.

The WBO route, a path O’Sullivan has tread in the past, looks relatively clear with champion Jaime Munguia set to vacate and move up following his next defence.

Julian Williams is the unified IBF and WBA champion while Tony Harrison holds the WBC crown.

There is also the option of an all-Irish megafight with Dennis Hogan who most felt got the better of Munguia when they met in April.
