Spike O’Sullivan aiming for statement stoppage in comeback fight

Spike O’Sullivan [28(20)-3(2)] is ready to come back with a bang.

The Cork KO artist fights for the first time since his defeat to Canadian David Lemieux and for the first time at home since 2014 on the aptly-named ‘Homecoming’ card in Mayo – and is determined to deliver a knockout performance for the home fans.

The man with the most famous moustache in sport would be expected to beat Gabor Gorbics live on TG4 and considering his power and the fact he has eight rounds to get the job done, a stoppage would look likely.

However, the Paschal Collins-trained fighter, who begins his descent towards light middleweight at the Royal Theatre, is adamant he can’t take anything for granted.

Light middle seems to offer O’Sullivan the quickest passage to a coveted world title. Indeed, a WBO light middleweight title fight looks attainable as it’s currently held by fellow Golden Boy puncher Jamie Munguia and should soon be challenged for by Kildare’s Dennis Hogan.

So, every fight at the new weight now becomes an absolute mustwin for the Mahon man and he knows this well.

“A win is vital on Friday night. A loss would be an absolute disaster,” said O’Sullivan when speaking to the Evening Echo.

“He’s experienced and he can punch a bit as well as he has 16 knockouts. I won’t be taking anything for granted.”

That said, while he is not expecting a walkover, the 34-year-old is predicting a knockout.

Gorbics has been stopped five times in 39 bouts – by Anthony Fowler, Liam Williams, Asina Byfield, Sergey Lubkovich, and Kerman Lejarraga – and never before the fifth round.

O’Sullivan is aiming to make a statement and explained how “I always look to entertain and look for a knockout.”

“Friday night will be no different and I’m looking forward to trying to entertain the fans with a knockout,” he added before expressing his excitement at fighting in Mayo.

“It’s definitely going to be sold out and there should be a fantastic atmosphere.”
