Spike: I want to pass American trial and secure Kid Chocolate fight

GARY ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan plans to pass an American ‘trial’ on Thursday to open up a path way to WBO middleweight champion of the World Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin.

The Cork middleweight shipped out to Boston last week and fights for the first time since he lost to Billy Joe Saunders in Wembley Arena last July when he trades leather with Jose Medina in The House of Blues on Thursday night.

It’s the former Irish champions first outing under the Murphy’s Boxing promotional banner and he is keen put on a show in front of the American fight fans and his new promoters, who are heavily linked with Irish American The Drop Kick Murphys.

‘Spike’ knows there is pressure to impress, but is motivated by the belief a performance on a show co promoted by Golden Boy could re open a path to a massive fight with New York’s Peter Quillin.

“This is a trail. I have to show them what I’ve got and put on a good performance. I am fighting Jose Medina. He is a good boxer and has been in with some good names. He drew Joachim Alcine, who fought Matthew Macklin and was was a WBA World champion, so it is a chance for me to make an impression,” said the Cork 29 year old.

“It is my first time in the ring for 11 months, but I have been training harder than ever and I am feeling good. I am confident I can win with a good performance. There is a bit of pressure, especially after going into the fight after the loss.

“Kid Chocolate is a fight I would like and my promoters have links with Golden Boy so a good performance could open a path way to a World title shot for me. I have to overcome this fight first, but Kid Chocolate is definitely a fight I would like and he is a fighter I think that would suit me.”

Kid Chocolate isn’t the only Irish fighter the Pascal Collins trained Celtic Warrior Gym fighter has set his sights on. With Andy Lee and Matthew Macklin looking less likely to provide an all Irish middleweight dust up, O’Sullivan a Cork versus Tipperary clash could capture fight fans imagination.

“Matthew Macklin has called out Kid Chocolate and Matthew is a fight I would love too. Matthew is a top quality fighter and has been in three world title fights and I would be confident of beating him too. That is a fight that would sell and would attract the fans. If I impress in America on June 5 it would be a fight that would attract attention both there and in Ireland. We are two come forward fighters, who can punch so it would be a war.”
