Spike believes Douglas win could lead to Golovkin chance

Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan [26(18)-2(1)] isn’t afraid of a call-out, and has certainly talked himself into some big fights over the years.

The most notable probably being Chris Eubank Jr, a Twitter rival that eventually became a ring foe in the chief support of a big Sky Box Office event.

The Cork middleweight did lose that clash, being pulled out after seven, but managed to raise his profile and stuck two fingers up to those who suggested his Eubank taunts would lead to nothing.

‘Spike’ will raise eyebrows again now with renewed calls to face WBA-WBC-IBF champion Gennady Golovkin.

Most would suggest GGG, who looks set to rematch with recent visitor to Belfast Canelo Alvarez in 2018, is not just unattainable, but a man most should avoid.

However, the Cork middleweight believes a win over rising U.S. contender Antoine Douglas [22(16)-1(1)-1] on the chief support bout of the WBO middleweight title clash between champion and former opponent Billy Joe Saunders and home favourite David Lemieux at the Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, in Canada on Saturday December 16th will open a pathway to the dangerous Kazakh. 

Amazingly, Douglas is one of the few top fighters not called out by O’Sullivan, but the Mahon man believes his WBO Inter-Continental title fight next week, live on HBO, is the perfect platform to secure a Golovkin fight.

“He [Douglas] is ranked by the WBO, WBC and WBA so I am going to take his ranking. I am going to steal the show in Quebec. Billy Joe and Lemieux is a good fight, but it doesn’t excite. My fight is going to be exciting and then I am going to fight GGG. You see, HBO love him and they are going to love me too. A fight between me and him you won’t need a ring, a phone box will do,” he explained to Irish-boxing.com.

Spike would be massive underdog if he does somehow become a viable Golovkin foe, although was previously told by the Asian’s team to stay ready, but the Celtic Warrior Gym fighter believes he could shock the World.

Having watched Golovkin and Kell Brook in action last year, the Leesider confident he could hurt the World champion – and wasn’t shy about explaining how he could beat GGG.

“I describe it like this – Kell Brook is a welterweight and he rocked him with a left upper cut with his left hand – which isn’t his back hand.”

“For people that never boxed imagine a footballer kicking a ball with his weaker foot without any leverage or back lift, now think of a footballer kicking a ball with his strong foot and coming onto it. Kell Brook rocked him with the first one I described and I nearly put Anthony Fitzgerald’s head through the 3Arena roof the other way. Why is Golovkin any different?”
