Slimmed-down Spike targeting Smith-Canelo winner

After a break away from the ring following his loss to Chris Eucbank Jr, Spike O’Sullivan is back, at a lower weight, and chasing World titles.

The Cork KO artist was due to fight at the end of this month, but his return to the ring has been further postponed due to an over-full card. While frustrating, O’Sullivan expects to be back out in the very near future, and spoke to Irish-Boxing.com about his time off and his plans at 154lbs.

The Leesider explained that “I took a couple of months off after the Eubank fight after bursting my eardrum.”

“I went to see the consultant to see if I could fight again.I had to check if I could fight again because this was the third time this happened – It went against Billy Joe Saunders, against Eubank, and it happened when I was sparring a Cuban guy in between those fights.”

“I thought maybe it was a weakness, but the consultant gave me the all clear. There is no weakness he just said it was bad luck.”

The Celtic Warriors fighter, a noted puncher at middleweight, expects to make a splash at light middleweight, and has immediately set his sights on a World title fight – with the winner of September’s WBO title clash between Liam Smith and Canelo Alvarez looking particularly appealing.

Describing his plans going forward in a new division, Spike outlined how “I was going to look toward a Liam Smith fight, we all want to challenge for World titles.”

“I would love the winner of Smith and that Mexican that thinks he is Irish. People are writing off Smith, but he is unbeaten, tough and game.”

“I think he is a better version of Anthony Fitzgerald – and Anthony Fitzgerald gave Andy Lee and Hassan N’Dam problems, so I can’t see why Smith can’t do the same to Canelo.”

“I am in this game to win World titles and make money. It would be a dream for me to fight for a World title and if Smith wins I would love a crack. I would relish the opportunity to fight him.”

“Then again imagine fighting the Irish-looking guy in Mexico, how great would that be. I’d fight any of them once I get a ranking.”
