Sean McGlinchey ready to go on a roll after “internet troll” trouble

An “internet troll” threatened to end Sean McGlinchey‘s career before it ever really started but the exciting prospect has been given the all clear and returns to the ring this Summer.

The Derry middleweight was set to enter Ireland’s Last Man Standing in March but found himself stripped of his boxing licence following online allegations from an anonymous poster.

McGlinchey [2(0)-0] had previously suffered an injury in sparring, previously reported as an illness, in the build up to what he had hoped would be his third pro fight and ultimately had to pull out of his Celtic Nations title clash with Gerard Healy scheduled for October of last year.

‘Mummy’s Bhoy’ was then passed fit to fight and entered the TG4-broadcast Last Man Standing competition. The seek and destroy merchant was installed as one of the early favourites for the March 3rd Prizefighter-style tournament.

However, what new manager Seamus Cunning describes as an “internet troll” started to post “false rumours” about a head injury online, the British Boxing Board of Control suspended the Derry fighter’s licence.

McGlinchey was forced to pull out the career-changing Last Man Standing and now hasn’t fought since June of last year.

“Sean suffered a training injury leading up to his title fight against Gerard Healy in October which left him with no option to withdraw much to his disappointment,” Cunning told Irish-Boxing.com.

“Since getting the all clear by his doctors to box again, he entered Last Man Standing in Dublin in March and was one of the favourites to win the competition until an internet troll decided to spread false rumours about Sean’s health. On the world of an internet troll Sean’s BBBoC licence was suspended.”

It was another disappointing setback in what was a difficult year for the fan-friendly Creggan puncher but one that is in the past now according to his new manager.

Commonwealth bronze medallist McGlinchey will make a long-overdue return on JB Promotions July 7th National Stadium show and is looking to get busy for the remainder of the year.

“Sean is getting ready to rumble again after being given the all clear and will be back boxing again in a matter of months,” outlined Cunning.

“Many thanks to Jay Byrne who offered Sean a comeback fight on his “The Beginning” bill at the National Stadium on July 7th. We were delighted to accept and are looking forward to getting back in the ring.”

Obviously upset by the BBBofC’s decision to suspend McGlinchey’s licence, his team have switched allegiances to the Boxing Union of Ireland, which will serve the fighter’s Irish title aspirations well.

“Sean will be boxing now under a BUI licence now so I am sure whenever he gets his first fight out of way he will be looking to stay active.”

“He brings a large colourful support from Derry and the North West. I am sure any promoter in the country will be looking to get “Mummys Bhoy” on their shows in the not too distant future.”
