Sean McComb to take short-notice step-up on Belfast bill

Sean McComb [4(3)-0] will take a short-notice step-up in Belfast on Friday night.

The Belfast lightweight has seen his opponent for the ‘King of the Celts’ card at the Titanic Exhibition Centre changed at late notice and will now face a legitimate test in his first six round contest.

Originally due to take on Slovak hardman Ivan Godor [20(6)-64(9)-4], McComb will now face Hungarian dangerman Zoltan Szabo [24(10)-12(4)].

The Central European 24-year-old has ruled the roost in his home country, winning 20 out of 20 including the Hungarian light welterweight title, and is well known on the circuit.

The Magyar has caused his fair share of shocks on the road, ending the unbeaten records of prospects Zack Davies, Ilhami Aydemir, and Andranik Hakobyan as well as infamously stopping Dublin’s Stephen Ormond to the body in the fifth round of their clash in Scotland two years ago.

Always game, Szabo regularly comes in at late notice and above his natural weight.

All of the ‘Sticky Man’s’ stoppage defeats have come versus light welters, losing on cuts to Ohara Davies, stopped to the body in the ninth round by light welter Robbie Davies Jr, in the second by light welter Jason Easton, and in the first by Russian Georgi Chelokhsaev.

Of his eight nine defeats, Olympic champion Daniyar Yeleussinov is the only man to have won every round versus the Budapest boxer who always seems to cause problems. Szabo has dropped European lightweight champion Emiliano Marsili, lost by a point to Lee Appleyard, been competitive with European super featherweight champion Devis Boschiero, Armenian Vladimir Sarukhanyan, and in his rematch with Stephen Ormond, as well as losing a tight fight with German James Cherejj.

Szabo was due to face Kildare’s Gary Cully, who also features on this weekend’s bill, during the summer but inexplicably pulled out at late notice.

McComb, who is looking for his fifth win in under four months, said that he has “a change of opponent for Friday and a step up too! Looking forward to the test.”

“Bang, Bang, Gravy Chip!”
