Sean McComb seeks strong opponent for next outing

Fast track specialist Sean McComb [6(3)-0] sees no point in slowing down and is hoping for another upgrade in opponent and rounds when he enters the ring next.

Having blitzed his way to five wins in four months the Belfast light welter was handed a step up for his first fight in 2019.

‘The Public Nuisance’ faced former BBBofC Midlands Area champ and British title challenger Troy James in just his sixth bout.

In keeping with his impressive start to pro life, the Danny Vaughan-trained southpaw looked good while winning against a game if outsized foe, building on a similarly impressive victory over Zoltan Szabo in December.

Common consensus would suggest such a win so early would buy McComb time and afford him another learning fight next, but the fighter himself wants to stick to the progression theme.

The 26-year-old is hoping for another named opponent as well as an upgrade in terms of rounds when he fights on the undercard of Ryan Burnett’s return at the Ulster Hall on Friday May 17th.

“Another step up makes more sense. I want to keep plugging on and moving forward. It wouldn’t benefit me to take a step back,” he told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I’m hoping for more rounds maybe an eight rounder against a tough opponent who comes to win,” he adds before praising the tactics employed in his James win.

“My last performance was decent against a guy with a good record. I was given tactics by Danny and I stuck to them. Going into every round he asked me to try something and I did it, so he’s happy and I am happy!”

The nature of McComb’s quickfire start has set alight a degree of hype surrounding the Turf Lodge slickster.

The fighter, who was once told he hadn’t a style suited for the pros. has been on the receiving end of massive praise and has been backed by Carl Frampton as a potential star.

Just like all the challenges presented him thus far, McComb seems to be taking the accolades in his stride – indeed, he stresses he has no option but to.

“I’ve no choice but to deal with it. I suppose it comes with the good performances so I have to be happy with that and just stay focused.”

The numbers aware of McComb’s potential may increase come May 17th as his seventh pro fight will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The European Games bronze medallist is delighted to be appearing on the platform and will be looking to win new fans in America.

“Its massive to fight on ESPN. I couldn’t have imagined a bigger platform with such a wide audience on just my seventh fight in nine months.”
