Sean McComb gets Ireland off to winning start at European Championships

Sean McComb got Ireland off to a winning start this evening at the European Championships in Kharkiv.

The Belfast light welter was the first Irishman through the ropes in Ukraine in the Round of 32.

The Holy Trinity man comfortably defeated Czech boxer Erik Agateljan this evening.

Now just two wins from a medal and one win from qualifying for the World Championships, McComb faces Russian number one seed and reigning world champion Vitaly Dunaytsev in the last 16 on Monday.

McComb recently defeated the same opponent at the international round robin in Dublin.

The top eight boxers in each weight qualify for Hamburg, while the boxer defeated by the champion in the Last 16 by the champion will also qualify should a German reach the quarter finals.

Kurt Walker and Rio Olympian Steven Donnelly are in action tomorrow.
