“It’s been a long time coming” – Sean Magee ready for ring return

Sean Magee [1(1)-0] was one of the unluckier Irish boxers in 2017.

The Belfast super bantamweight’s debut date fell through in April after his opponent missed a flight and, following an impressive first-round stoppage when he eventually made his bow in June, he has been out of the ring ever since.

The Breen Team fighter, nephew of the thee fighting Magee brothers, will finally make his return to competitive action tomorrow night in Belfast.

Magee boxes on the ‘Danger at The Devenish 3’ card in West Belfast and is just delighted to be back fighting.

The 28-year-old explained to Irish-Boxing.com how “it’s been a long break since making my debut back in June.”

“It has been frustrating at times – after you get the first one out of the way you just want back in there as soon as possible again but it didn’t go that way for me.”

“I was scheduled to fight again in October but the bill was cancelled and had a bit of an injury so it wasn’t meant to be so I have had to wait to now to get my second fight. It’s been a long time coming but I’m just happy it’s here now.”

While he has been out of the ring, Magee has been in the gym, and he described how “I feel like I’m improving. I’m always listening and wanting to learn in the gym and with John and Eamonn as my coaches there is a lot to learn so I’m always trying my best to listen and learn from them.”

On his return, Magee will face durable Nicaraguan journeyman Elvis Guillen [9(6)-34(8)-4], a fairly strong match-up.

“To be honest, I don’t know a lot about him,” admits Magee.

“I just know he’s a well-experienced fighter with fortysomething fights. A tough guy but I have worked hard for this fight and I’m ready for whatever he has to bring on Saturday night.”

Following such a long period between his first and second fights, Magee is reluctant to make big predictions for the year ahead.

The North Belfast man outlined how “I haven’t got any plans, I’m just taken it one fight at a time and hoping to stay active this year.”

“We’ll see what comes out of it, hopefully it’s a good year.”
