Santa Cruz willing to defend against Frampton in Belfast in possible ‘Fight of the Year’

WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz is willing to come to Belfast and put his title on the line in a clash he believes has fight of the year potential.

Frampton faces Hugo Cazares at the Odyssey Arena on April 4 in a WBC final eliminator and the victor will move into Santa Cruz pole position.

There were suggestions from some quarters that the extremely popular Cyclone Promotions puncher would have to travel Stateside to get a his Cruz crack, but it seems the American-Mexican would be willing to come to Belfast.

Cruz himself has to overcome a Cristian Mijares March 8 challenge, but if he emerges victorious he is ready to make the massive fight in Ireland, defend against the most partisan crowd in Irish sport and give the former European champion an opportunity to win  a coveted title on home soil.

“That’s no problem, I’m willing to fight him anywhere,” said Santa Cruz.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter where the fight is, as long as my manager and promoter are okay with it then I’m willing to go wherever, whether that is in Ireland or over here [in the USA].”

“Frampton is a great opponent, he’s really strong and comes forward, he fights in my style and I think if I face him it will be a great fight for me,” he added. He has great power and I could see a fight of the year or at least a fight of the night because we both come forward and go for it so it would be a real battle.”
