Sam Carroll calls for early step-ups following impressive debut

His debut went under the radar somewhat on an action-packed TV broadcast card but new-to-the-game pro Sam Carroll is determined to get people talking about him sooner rather than later.

The Bray super bantamweight punched for pay for the first time against Kamil Jaworek on the ‘Clash of the Titans’ card and showed flashes of real quality across the four rounds.

The choice of opponent proved a show of faith claims the Pete Taylor-trained fighter and, not long after his debut win, he was calling to be stepped up further.

Indeed, the 20-year-old, who admits to getting involved in ‘silly stuff’ after leaving the amateurs in his late teens, hopes to be fighting for titles within two or three fights.

“I want to get my name out there as soon as possible and I think that was a good start four rounds against a more experienced journeyman,” he told Irish-Boxing.com after his 40-36 points win.

“He is one of the better journeyman, but I felt confident. I am getting good sparring and I think I showed out there that I have a bit more about me.

“He shows the level of opponent I want. I am not looking for lads just be filling up cards for the sake of it. I don’t really want to be hanging around. I would love a title fight in two or three fights. The sooner the better for me, I want to get my name out there.”

The Boxing Ireland fighter impressed over the four rounds. Not only did he fight well he looked confident, composed and relaxed.

There was more an air of job done than a great deal of excitement in the dressing room following the win and he revealed after the occasion didn’t really faze him.

“I am delighted with it yeah, but it’s just the first win,” notes the level-headed Carroll.

“This morning I wasn’t nervous. To be honest I wasn’t even excited. It was a long day the day before and I was trying not to think about it. As the day progressed I started to get that buzz and started to get focused.”

“Like I said I think I was a level above him and I want to get going now, no point in hanging around.”

Part of the growing Taylormade stable at the Colosseum Gym in Ballyfermot, Carroll is taking it all in his stride.

He explained how “I took it at four weeks notice, but I had been training alongside the lads anyway. Luke [Keeler] had a European title fight and Gary [Cully] had a fight last night so I was in and along with the lads for the last six or seven weeks.”

“It’s been good to be alongside the likes of them since I turned pro.
