Rocket Booster – Eddie Treacy feeds off Buckley’s success ahead of massive fight

Eddie Treacy claims club mate Regan Buckley’s European Games success has given him a boost ahead of a fight he is already ‘buzzing’ for.

The Bray fighter watched on as his training partner claimed his first ever major amateur international medal in Minsk last month and admits it give him something extra during his preparations for a mouthwatering all-Irish clash.

‘The Honey Badger’  takes on Owen Duffy on the undercard of Noel Murphy’s Leeside Revolution return this coming Saturday night and is confident the hard work he put in alongside ‘Rego’ can see him celebrate ‘Rocket’-like success.

“It’s a pleasure enough for me to even train beside Rego,” Treacy told Irish-boxing.com.

“The two of us have the very same work ethic, we always train extremely hard and that’s why we get on so well together. Of course seeing him over there representing his country was a great boost for me during my camp, because I had seen first hand how much work he had put into it,” he adds before heaping more praise on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic hopeful.

“I seen what most people don’t see the countless hours of hard work by him and our coach Mark Buckley. To see him bring home a medal for his country was amazing, I was absolutely delighted for him. It’s only the start for the Rocket.”

Last month was about Buckley in terms of the St Teresa faithful, but Saturday is Treacy’s time.

Not long after teaming up with Boxing Ireland the keen-t0-fight light middleweight was handed his first all-Irish fight. It’s safe to say the domestic derby nature of has added to Treacy’s excitement levels.

“Of course there is added excitement. I can’t help but get excited for it. Here, you have two hungry up and coming fighters coming to try take each other’s heads off on July 20th. These are the type of fights I want to be involved in and these are the fights that everyone wants to see. I am absolutely buzzing for it.”

It shouldn’t be a surprise for any that follow the game in Ireland to see Treacy accept such a fight so early in his career.

The Wicklow man has always been open about his desire to fight, his eagerness create memories for his fans and his willingness to accept any challenge.

However, is keen to point out that doesn’t mean he values competing and entertaining over winning. The Mark Buckley-trained fighter didn’t accept the offer to fight his Cavan rival so he could say he stepped up, rather because he believes he can step up.

“These nights are better if I win and that’s what I’m planning to do is win. I want to create memorable nights for myself and everyone supporting me, but winning is everything. I said it before I’m not here to make up numbers and I wouldn’t accept a fight that I didn’t think I could win,” he adds before pointing out he has done everything to ensure he does defeat southpaw Duffy on the first pro show to visit Cork in a decade.

Camp has gone great, I have my put my body through hell once again for it. We don’t do anything different as we train hard for every single fight regardless of the opponent. We always put the work in and this one was no different. Obviously we just had more southpaw sparring with him being a southpaw. Everything has gone great, I have pushed myself every session.”

One of Irish boxing’s true everymen isn’t one for predictions or any form of trash talk and will only commit to giving his all in the Neptune Stadium this weekend.

“I don’t like doing predictions, you can talk tough all you want but your prediction means nothing come fight night. I just know when I get in there I will do anything to get the win by any means necessary,” he adds before issuing the usual list of thank yous.

“I just want to thank my coaches in St Teresas Boxing Club for all their work especially Mark Buckley and Jeff Cahill. I also want to give a massive shout to my sponsors for their continuous support:
