Ricky Hatton backs Nathan Gorman to show different side in ‘Big Sexy’ clash

A different Nathan Gorman [12(10)-0] will be on show in Manchester on Saturday night – not because he has done anything different in camp, but because Sean Turner [12(8)-2(0)] will force him to change his style claims coach and former two-weight world champ Ricky Hatton.

The British boxing legend is confident the young heavyweight he trains will emerge victorious and feels this will be achieved in a manner never seen before in terms of Gorman.

The 21-year-old has developed a reputation as a big man with good movement, fast hands, and a decent skill set but Hatton admits Gorman has yet to show his ability or strength as an inside fighter.

That will all change on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s big BT Sport-broadcast return, according to ‘The Hitman’ as he predicts Dubliner Turner will put Gorman under pressure the like he has never been under before.

“It’s Nathan’s toughest fight, he knows that. It’s the right fight at the right time. Everyone who has seen Nathan fight knows he is a nice kid and he’s got unbelievable boxing ability and unbelievable hand speed. One thing he hasn’t shown and he will have to show it against Sean is that he has the stamina, he can go through the gears and that he can fight up close and not just at a distance,” Hatton explained at the final press conference before the Manchester fight night.

While Hatton admits Gorman hasn’t had to deal with a puncher sitting on his chest and hasn’t had to show any good inside work in his 12 fights to date, the coach, who also trains Chris Blaney, is adamant his heavyweight is capable of winning with a different style.

“He can do that, he is very good up close and in the pocket. He has that but hasn’t had to show it yet. Hopefully Sean will bring the best out of him,” he added before suggesting Turner is coming into the fight with false confidence.

“You have to tick the boxes as you go along and there are a couple of boxes he hasn’t ticked yet and I think that is something that has given Sean confidence.”

“He [Turner] probably thinks he is against this young kid with good hand speed and good boxing ability but there is a little bit more to him and he hasn’t had a chance to show it yet. He [Gorman]will definitely have to on Saturday because Sean is going to bring it to him.

“Sean’s been asking for it for a couple of years so I know he is up for it. It’s great to see both the boys want it, are looking determined to come out on top, and I think it will be a great fight that will bring out the side to Nathan he hasn’t shown yet.”
