Vargas in America rumoured to be next for Frampton

Rey Vargas has been put forward as the man who will next challenge for Carl Frampton’s IBF super bantamweight title by the boxing rumour mill.

‘The Jackal’ and his team are currently in New York  after visiting the IBF Convention in Montreal and the unofficial word on the street is that the super bantamweight star will fight in the Big Apple next- and Rey Vargas is the muted opponent.

Frampton has expressed a desire to compete in America and his promoter Barry McGuigan believes his charge has the style to excite Stateside fight fans and the ability to break into the pound for pound rankings.

America might come a bit sooner than expected after Scott Quigg negotiations fell through, but seems the best option if the likes of Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz, Gullerimo Rigondeaux and Nonito Donaire are not immediate options.

Rey, who fights this weekend, which would suggest if he is indeed next up for Frampton, the bout won’t be taking place in July, is ranked number 5 by IBF and has an impressive 20 knock outs from 23 wins. The undefeated Mexican also holds the WBC International Silver super bantamweight title.

The rumours of an away fight haven’t seemed to upset the ‘Jackal Army’ and twitter is full of ‘road trip talk’. If Frampton could bring his loyal fans to America and they could generate an Odyssey style atmosphere abroad he will most certainly make friends with American Tv executives.
