RESULTS: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – March

Following four days of voting and a huge number of votes, The Liffey Crane Hire Boxer of the Month for March has been chosen.

With two pro shows and boxers fighting all over the world, it was an extremely busy month with the longest list of contenders yet.

So without any further ado, the award goes to:

Craig O’Brien
One year and five fights after kick-starting his career, Craig O’Brien is now the Irish light middleweight champion.

The inner-city fighter spent almost a year and a half out of the ring following his first three fights but came back with a vengeance in 2017, claiming the BUI Celtic title.

The Irish title was added last month, with O’Brien putting on by far the best performance of his career so far.

The Mountjoy Street fighter outpointed the relentless Jay Byrne over ten rounds in the headline fight of the Ireland’s Last Man Standing card.

As was expected, O’Brien banked early rounds but managed to continue to keep a hold of the bout down the stretch in the face of constant pressure from Byrne and despite talk that he had severe difficulty making the weight.

In the end, the classy O’Brien took the fight, which was shown live on TG4, via scorecards of 99-92 and 98-92 twice.

Following a holiday to Florida with the family, O’Brien is now back in Celtic Warriors Gym where he is acting as chief sparring partner for likely Gennady Golovkin opponent Spike O’Sullivan.

Coming in second was Roy Sheahan after his phenomenal win in Ireland’s Last Man Standing, a tournament he went into with just one pro bout under his belt. In third is Stephen McAfee who defeated Colin O’Donovan in an epic rematch to take the BUI Celtic title.
