RESULTS: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – AUGUST

After our biggest week of voting ever, the Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the month has been decided.

Following an unprecedented number of public votes, and some heated debates among the judging panel, a winner has been determined from the six nominees

Michaela Walsh

The Belfast bantamweight claimed gold at the EU Championships in Cascia, Italy, storming to the top of the podium following four straight unanimous decision wins. What made the victory even more impressive was the fact that Walsh was initially not even in the team, and was added late on.

It was a rousing comeback for the Monkstown fighter, who missed out on Olympic qualification at flyweight and was forced to miss this year’s Elite Championships due to injury.

The win in Italy was also historic in a way as it was the first Senior international gold won by a female Irish fighter other than Katie Taylor, and it is a medal which will hopefully open the floodgates.

Walsh is currently enjoying some downtime ahead of a move up to featherweight for the Ulster Seniors in November where a win would most likely book her a spot at the Commonwealth Games next year. Walsh’s younger brother Aidan will also be looking to qualify at welterweight.

The 24 year old is a six-time Irish Senior champions, a European Youth bronze medalist, and a Commonwealth silver medalist, but the last month has seen her create a new career highlight.

Congratulations Michaela!

Finishing runner up was EU silver medalist Kelly Harrington, who gave some sensational performances out in Italy, while World Championships runner-up Joe Ward came in in third spot following his brave and brilliant showings in Germany.
