RESULTS: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – April

Following three days of voting and by far the largest number of votes yet, The Liffey Crane Hire Boxer of the Month for April has been chosen.

With two pro shows and medals galore, it was an extremely busy month with the longest list of contenders yet.

So without any further ado, the award goes to:

Luke Keeler

The Dubliner defeated Conrad Cummings on the Frampton-Donaire undercard in Belfast, putting in the best performance of his career.

Recently having become a full-time fighter under Pete Taylor, the improvements were evident in Keeler who fairly dominated the pre-fight favourite to win a wide decision on the scorecards.

Keeler banked the early rounds en-route to a 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93 win on the cards but this does not tell the full story.

The 31-year-old hurt Cummings in the second round, stamping his authority on the bout before everything threatened to unravel. Major cuts around the eyes at the midway stage had Keeler’s face a mess and he was in danger of a TKO loss before some miracle work from Niall Byrne in the corner.

The Ballyfermot man then went on to hold off a late charge from the super-fit Cummings to seal the best win of his career and the WBO middleweight title. Keeler will enter the next rankings and already has his eye on champion Billy Joe Saunders, should the Englishman require a voluntary defence.

Coming in second was Leitrim’s Dearbhla Rooney who, on her major international tournament debut, defeated Russian opposition to secure European Junior silver. In third was Sligo’s Dean Clancy who, in his first year in the category, stormed to European Youth silver in Italy.
