Referee and Judges announced for Mayweather v McGregor

The four men who will officiate the Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor superfight on Saturday August 26th have been confirmed.

While the Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting this evening hit the headlines due to the “one off exception” that will allow the light middleweight pair use 8oz gloves, the referee and judges in charge of the fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas were also confirmed.

The man in the middle will be Robert Byrd. The Las Vegas judge has reffed one previous Mayweather fight, his points win over Robert Guerrero back in 2013.

Referee Kenny Bayless, who officiated four of Mayweather’s last six fights and who Team McGregor did not want in charge of the bout, to was confirmed to have been out of the running yesterday due to comments made regarding the fight last year.

The three scoring judges at ringside will be Burt A. Clements, Dave Moretti, and Guido Cavalleri.

Las Vegas veteran Moretti has been ringside for 11 of Mayweather’s past 16 fights. At 116-112, he was the closest of the three judges for the Zab Judah fight in 2006 and at 118-110 he had the widest official score for the Pacquiao fight.

Italian Cavalleri has been selected after the NSAC approved a request from Team McGregor for there to be an international judge on the panel. This was also the case for Mayweather’s rematch with Marcos Maidana, which Cavalleri scored 115-112 in favour of ‘Money May.’

Californian Clements has scored two of Mayweather’s previous fights – 116-112 in the Pacquiao fight and 117-111 (the widest official score) in the first Maidana fight.

In terms of top Irish fighters, Cavalleri scored the drawn 2014 fight between Andy Lee v Peter Quillin 113-112 in favour of the Limerick man, while he scored the first Frampton-Santa Cruz fight a 114-114 draw. In the Frampton-Santa Cruz rematch earlier this year, Clements had a 114-114 draw, while Moretti gave it 115-113 to Santa Cruz.
