Quigg explains need for Frampton rematch – ‘moving on’ is quitting

Scott Quigg is determined to secure himself a rematch with Belfast’s Carl Frampton.

The Bury puncher lost in a much-hyped super bantamweight unification with Frampton at the Manchester Arena in February on a Sky PPV show.

Quigg had his jaw broken during the loss, and is only now re-entering training ahead of a November return. Frampton on the other hand has stepped up to featherweight and will challenge WBA champ Leo Santa Cruz at the end of the month in New York on the biggest Premier Boxing Champions card of the Summer.

While Quigg is targeting an IBF or WBC 122lb title upon his return, rumoured to be on Anthony Joshua’s next undercard, the Englishman admits that he will soon be following Frampton to the featherweight division.

The 27 year old Matchroom fighter told Sky Sports that “I see myself moving up, certainly not too far in the future – pretty soon in fact – because at the end of the day I want that rematch with Frampton.”

“I am big for my weight so if a world title fight at featherweight came up I would be in a good place.

The defeat to Frampton was devastating to Quigg, a boxer famed for his dedication and winning mentality. Explaining his need for a rematch, the Joe Gallagher-trained fighter reasoned that “If I came up to you and nicked your wallet, you’d want it back wouldn’t you? And do anything to get it back.”

“I see people saying ‘he needs to move on’, but move on where?”

“At the end of the day I am a winner and I want to avenge that loss.”

That was the biggest fight of my career but it didn’t go my way.”

“If you want to move down a different path, it is quitting.”
