Pro-suited Chantelle Cameron plots Katie Taylor unification path

Chantelle Cameron took a significant step toward challenging Katie Taylor target Delfine Persoon and potentially setting up a unification class with the Irish boxing superstar at the weekend.

The Shane McGuigan-trained fighter defeated former World title challenger Jessica Gonzalez, a late replacement, to claim the previously vacant WBC lightweight Silver rankings belt at the York Hall on Saturday, adding the strap to her lightly regarded IBO world title.

Cyclone Promotions hope the unanimous points decision win over the tough Mexican and the belt will force the WBC to make the the English power puncher mandatory for the world title currently held by the Belgian.

IBF and WBA titleholder Taylor, who defends her straps against Cindy Serrano in Boston this Saturday night, has undisputed status on her goal list and thus is eager to fight whoever holds the WBC and WBO belts.

Manager Brian Peters mentioned Cameron [8(5)-0] when discussing the kind of opponents that could give Taylor [10(5)-0] some high-profile and noteworthy names to help cement her legacy further.

The 27-year-old believes she is a more natural pro that the undefeated unified world champion, wants the clash, and she can have it whenever she wants it if she becomes a world title holder herself.

“That’s the picture I have in my mind,” she said post the win which played out, in part, live on Channel 5.

“Katie is an amazing boxer but I feel her style is more suited to the amateurs. I’m the opposite. I am more suited to the pro game, which will make the fight more interesting,” noted Cameron who was defeated 28-10 by Taylor in the 2011 EU semi-finals.

The Irishwoman’s next port of call is Boston and former WBO featherweight world title holder Serrano.

Should she, as expected, win at the TD Garden, Taylor will be back on the title and big name opponent hunt and there is potential to squeeze in another fight by the end of the year.

The Olympic gold medal winner may again try and tempt Persoon into a fight and thus beat Cameron to the punch but, with Amanda Serrano retiring to focus on MMA and Natasha Jonas having to rebuild after her first career defeat, ‘Wham Bam Chan’s’ name could be in the hat title or not.
