Phil Sutcliffe Jr overcomes toilet trouble to score comeback KO

Andreas Maier came to the ring on Friday night with an unbeaten record, plenty of knockouts, and a scalp on his record of a big English prospect.

However Phil Sutcliffe Jr [14(9)-2(1)] was more worried about his own backside than the German-based Kazakh KO artist.

The Crumlin light welterweight fell quite ill with a bug during fight week, and was genuinely worried that nature could come calling during their six-round fire-fight on the Ginley Promotions ‘Danger at The Devenish 2’ bill in Belfast.

Sutcliffe explained how afterwards that “I was worried going in whether I’d need to go to the toilet!”

“I thought I was going to get sick in the second round – well, get sick or shit.”

“I was flying, he probably wouldn’t have hit me, but then I got this bug.”

“Sure look, these things happen, it was just good to get back in there throwing shots again. It was a good win, a tough opponent, and good to be back in the ring.”

Sutcliffe dropped the Assassin Boxing fighter thrice, with the end coming in the third round.

It was a return to winning ways following his controversial stoppage loss to Josh Leather in May.

“It’s good to be back in the ring and it was a good stoppage as well,” said Sutcliffe.

“It was good to stop someone that had never been stopped, all wins, and stops people.”

“A lot of people wouldn’t have taken that fight as one just to get back in the ring. To be honest though, I’ve been training for a while, the last eight, nine, weeks.”

The 28 year old is keen for a return to big fights as soon as possible, and outlined how “we’re waiting on some news so I won’t take too long off, enjoy a week off and a few days here and there, but I’ll be ticking over over the Christmas

“If there’s a small fight again, then we’ll take it, but sure once we have notice we’ll take anyone. It won’t matter.”

A potential fight that has been building is a domestic dust-up with Belfast southpaw Tyrone McKenna.

Sutcliffe is eager to face ‘The Mighty Celt’ and acknowledged how “they’re all calling now. I’ll get back to training and quieten them all now.

“McKenna’s acting the Billy big balls, give it a rest. I’ve asked for that fight, I’ve publicly announced that I want it, if that fight is given to me tomorrow I’ll take it.”
