Persoon doubles down on ‘robbed’ claims and isn’t happy with proposed rematch time frame

Delfine Persoon [43(18)-2(1)] has studied her now famous undisputed world title fight with Katie Taylor [14(6)-0] over 30 times and still feels the same way she did about the result as when she stormed out of the ring seconds after it was announced to the world.

The former WBC world lightweight champion felt she was ‘robbed’ then and after watching it back tens of times still feels she was ‘robbed’ of a famous win.

The Belgian had cried foul immediately after the fight and her cries were echoed by some fans, media experts and former fighters.

However, with time allowed for more in dept reflection the wider consensus was the Olympic gold medal winner won a close fight. While a few still argued they felt a tight affair should have went the way of Persoon they agreed any ‘robbery’ talk was wide of the mark.

Persoon disagrees.

“I have seen the fight thirty times. You feel on the spot that you have been robbed, but you still want to be sure that it is true. It was clear of course. We have been robbed. I have certainly won six out of ten rounds. Katie Taylor has won three. A round is undecided,” says Persoon.

The 34 year old is rematch keen and called for a return straight away. Such was the nature of the fight and such is Taylor’s desire to win an meeting between the pair in clearer fashion there is no doubt it will happen again. Indeed, the undisputed champion has told everyone a return is ‘inevitable’.

Team Taylor have suggested the return won’t be immediate with other big fights on the horizon. That doesn’t sit too easy with the fighter who was out pointed in Madison Square Garden and she hopes the WBC, who she has lodged a complaint with, will take action.

“We are already hearing that there will be no rematch before the summer of 2020. I do not want to stop this way. The WBC boxing association is the only association that wants to look into the matter. The WBC may want to demand a rematch via a challenge. The battle is not yet over.”
