Paddy Nevin promises commitment after “Pure Laziness” denies him knockout win

It will be the resolution most will bring into the New Year, but it’s one Paddy Nevin [2(0)-0] can’t afford to let slip once January is done.

The newest addition to the Irish heavyweight scene knows he has to improve on his fitness if he is to reach the level of performance he believes he is capable of.

The Swords puncher registered his second pro win on the Mayo Homecoming card on Friday last, but was a bit disappointed with how he performed against Hrvoje Bozinovic over four rounds.

The Steven O’Rourke-trained big man believes a lack of fitness and maybe even some lapses in commitment in his second camp meant he won by a 40-36 scoreline rather than the stoppage he had hoped for.

“It was tough, your man was tougher than what I expected after I’d watched his fights,” Nevin told Irish-Boxing.com after his second pro win.

“It wasn’t my greatest fight, it wasn’t my greatest performance, I slacked off a bit in my training camp. I think that was a bit silly. I’ve a lot of stuff to improve on but I know the mistakes I made.”

“I threw everything at him, I went for the stoppage. I could have stopped him but the gas tank was sort of going a bit so I had to reserve myself. I didn’t want to get stopped myself out of my own pure laziness.”

“I beat him handy enough, it was just a typical fight, a move around. He was a tough lad but I knew I could box him around.”

Nevin, who has 2019 Irish title dreams will progress to six rounders in the New Year, in his next fight if things go to plan, and claims he will have to be fitter to compete over the longer rounds.

“It’s a different ball game now, the six rounders are a different ball game. I’m going to have to really pull the finger out now and put the foot to the pedal. I have to work hard now because six rounds, they’re no joke,” he continued before stressing once he does improve on his physical condition he has the attributes to challenge any of the domestic heavys.

“If I get the fitness up, I can challenge anybody for anything. I’m confident I can be the best heavyweight in Ireland. I’ve the fastest jab, I’ve great movement, and I can bite down.”
