Distraught Donovan eliminated from European Under-22s

Paddy Donovan was left distraught at the European Under-22 Championships today in Russia.

The Limerick welterweight was eliminated at the Last 16 stage in Vladikavkaz by the Russian home favourite following a close fight this afternoon.

An early point deduction stacked the deck in Vakhid Abbasov’s favour but this would prove inconsequential as the Russian was awarded every round by four of the five judges en-rounte to a unanimous decision win.

In a cagey opener, Donovan was warned a number of times for hitting with the inside of the glove before an early point deduction

Donovan looked to have landed the more eye-catching wide punches in an open second but Abbasov was sneaking in plenty of short shots in return.

The Munster 20-year-old would force the action against the smart Russian in the third and celebrated at the bell but, with the deduction, the verdict was far from sure.

Going to the cards it was Abbasov, a European Junior silver medallist, who was awarded the 5-0 win with scorelines of 29-27 and four 30-26s, with the Polish judge, who gave Donovan the first, the only man to score a round in favour of the Irishman.

Donovan seemed shocked by the decision and would linger at centre ring before being motioned out by the referee.

Abbasov will now go on to box Swede Billy Liljeqvist for bronze.

Ireland have one more boxer in action today, with Galway middleweight Gabriel Dossen due in the ring at 1:45pm (Irish time).

The Olympic BC talent takes on Romanian Alberto Simion in the Last 16 and you can watch the fight live (as well as look back on Donovan’s fight) on the stream below:
