Team Ireland jetted out to Brazil yesterday for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Eight Irish boxers have qualified for the Games, and it is expected that they will once again lead the country in terms of medals won.

In fact, team captain Paddy Barnes is confident that a mind-boggling eight medals from eight boxers can be won.

The Belfast light flyweight told RTÉ that “each boxer has their own unique chance of medaling. Out of eight boxers we’re sending, I think, and everyone else feels, we’re realistically able to be bringing eight medals back”

Barnes’s thoughts were echoed by Irish team manager Joe Hennigan, who stated that “I believe it’s a team that is well capable of winning medals from these Olympic Games.

“They’ve all proven themselves at the very top level in the past, winning medals in Olympic, World, European, European Games and European Union competition, and winning in the World Series of Boxing and AIBA Pro Boxing.”

“It’s a team packed with international experience and every one of them is capable of bringing home a medal.”

Boxing begins at the Riocentro on August 6th

The Irish team comprises of Paddy Barnes, Katie Taylor, Mick Conlan, Joe Ward, Michael O’Reilly, David Oliver Joyce, Brendan Irvine, and Steven Donnelly.
