Oscar De La Hoya believes Dennis Hogan deserves an immediate rematch

Dennis Hogan deserves an immediate rematch with Jamie Munguia according to his rival’s famous promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

Team Hogan have been campaigning for a repeat since their man’s controversial defeat in Mexico earlier this month, calling for the World Boxing Organisation to do the right thing for the last two weeks.

Any hopes of a rematch diminished when the governing body re-scored the clash a draw but still failed to order a return.

DDP Promotions, who look after the career of the Brisbane-based Kildare man continue to campaign for justice – and it seems one of Munguia’s promoters believe they deserve it.

Speaking to the Courier Mail soon after a decision that a host have questioned, Golden Boy supremo De La Hoya said the 34-year-old deserves another shot at Munguia and his WBO light middleweight title.

“Well, Hogan deserves a rematch right away. He put in a tremendous performance and his stocks have gone through the roof in world boxing. It was a close, tough fight and Hogan shocked a lot of people.”

“He showed exactly why he came into the fight as the No.1 contender. He’s beaten a lot of good fighters in his career and he has arrived as a top fighter on the world scene,” said De La Hoya.

There are some who will question whether or not the Hall of Fame fighter, who looks after the careers of Jason Quigley and Aaron McKenna as well as working closely with Spike O’Sullivan, is being genuine or not. Indeed the divisive promoter may have merely been looking to placate an Australian outlet.

Additionally, the fact De La Hoya does not have full control over Munguia – Golden Boy and Zanfer Promotions work together with regard to the big for the weight Mexican starlet – means the pressure to do what DDP call ‘the right thing’ isn’t solely on him.

That said, the fact De La Hoya has said this publically is an encouraging sign at the very least.
