Opponent CONFIRMED for Spike O’Sullivan’s comeback fight
The opponent for Spike O’Sullivan‘s comeback has been confirmed.
The Cork fighter returns to the ring on Friday [December 7th] night at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar following his world title final eliminator.
O’Sullivan [28(20)-3(2)] was stopped in the first round of his grudge WBA middleweight world titre final eliminator versus Canadian David Lemieux in Las Vegas back in September.
Having taken comparatively little damage, 34-year-old O’Sullivan – who retains a promotional deal with Golden Boy – was back in training immediately and will be back in the ring at the more suitable weight of light middle just 12 weeks later.
Fighting on the ‘Homecoming’ card of his Celtic Warriors team mate, Ray Moylette, the Mahon man will box over eight rounds and will face Hungarian journeyman Gabor Gorbics [26(16)-13(5)].
The 31-year-old is known as being a solid test and all his stoppages have come in the fifth round or later – providing O’Sullivan with a durable yardstick to measure up against in a bout that will be shown live on TG4.
In his most recent fight, in October, ‘The Squirrel’ Gorbics was stopped in the fifth by Matchroom starlet Anthony Fowler and was also taken out in this round by European welterweight champion Kerman Lejarraga, Brit Asinia Byfield, and top Russian prospect Sergey Lubkovish while Welshman Liam Williams needed eight rounds to get rid of the Magyar.
Gorbics has seen the final bell against the likes of Olympic medallists Daniyar Yeleussinov, Shakhram Giyasov, and Russian starlet Radzhab Butaev, as well as O’Sullivan’s Murphys Boxing team-mate Mark DeLuca.
It is a relatively soft return bout for O’Sullivan who will be looking to round out his 2018 with a win before building towards a world title fight with WBO champion Jaime Munguia in the new year or, preferably, a vacant tilt versus countryman Dennis Hogan – itself a perfect fight for TG4 should the broadcaster continue showing boxing in 2019.
