2015: Tyson Fury ended ten years of Ukrainian dominance in the heavyweight division with a shock win in Duesseldorf. The former Irish champion out-thought, out-sized, and out-landed long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko to take the IBF, WBA, and WBO titles, as well as the lineal crown and the position as the best fighter on the planet.

The fight had been postponed a month, perhaps giving Fury more time to get in shape, and the Manchester-born fighter overcame some heated disputes over the gloves and canvas to get in the ring and dominate off the jab against a fighter who soon ran out of ideas.

While Fury has had a tough time since the win, he will always have the night when he shocked the World.

1956: A wonderful day in Melbourne saw Ireland guarantee two Olympic bronze medals via Belfast boys Freddie Gilroy and Johnny Caldwell.

Bantamweight Gilroy had scored shock knockout of favourite Boris Stepanov in the opening round, and would secure a medal with a points triumph over Italian Mario Sitri. Gilroy would lose in the semis to German Wolfgang Behrendt.

Flyweight Caldwell had opened up with a knockout win over Burma’s Yai Shwe, and would outpoint home favourite Warner Batchelor to win bronze. Caldwell would lose in the semi finals to Romanian Mircea Dobrescu

2015: Blanchardstown’s Darragh Foley grabbed the Australian lightweight title with a destructive win against champion Miles Zalewski. The Dubliner pummeled his way to a first round stoppage at the Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane to take the national title.

1998: The Raging Bull Darren Corbett sought to defend his Commonwealth cruiserweight title for a third time, whilst challenging for the vacant British title, at the Ulster Hall. The Belfast man however was stopped in the tenth round by Bruce Scott.
