On This Day: June 6th

In the first edition of our new feature, we take a look back through the archives and pick out the biggest fights on each calendar day throughout Irish boxing history.

2015: Irish light middleweight champ Dee Walsh gave a boxing exhibition against game Pole Patryk Litkiewicz on the MHD Promotions ‘Dee Day’ show at the Devenish Complex. Unbeknownst to most in attendance, it would be the last time we would see Waldo strut his stuff in the ring as the Belfast man would retire (for a second time) after falling out of love with the professional game.

The show also saw the debut of 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Joe Fitzpatrick, and appearances from James Tennyson, James Fryers, Paul Hyland Jr, Ger Healy, and Tyrone McKenna.

2014: A boxer taken from us far too early, young Eamonn Magee Jnr made his debut at the Holiday Inn in Belfast on a card that also featured Luke Keeler, Ciaran Bates, Alfredo Meli, and Willie Thompson.

Magee took on the rough and rugged Zoltan Horvath and did what very few boxers do, stop the tough Hungarian. Indeed in 38 losses, Horvath has only been beaten inside the distance five times, and no one has stopped him earlier than Magee who put the veteran away inside two.
