Olympic Qualifiers to take place in Turkey on April 13

IABA Press Officer Bernard O’Neil
The final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers will take place in Trabzon, Turkey between April 13 and 22.
With flyweight Michael Conlan, bantamweight John Joe Nevin and middleweight Darren O’Neill having already secured places at the 2012 Games, Ireland will be targeting seven Olympic berths in Trabzon.
The light-flyweight, bantamweight and lightweight divisions will be the most open in the north-eastern Turkish city with four places each available for the 30th Olympiad.
However, there will be no room for error on the banks of the Black Sea in the light-welterweight and heavyweight categories as there is just one Olympic place left in both classes.
Likewise, boxers competing in these classes will have to win gold to book their tickets for the London Games.
The Irish team for Trabzon will be ratified after the Irish Daily Star sponsored 2012 Elite Championships finals on Friday.
The 2012 AIBA World Women’s Championships in China in May will act as the only Olympic qualifiers for female boxers
Ireland will be targeting Olympic berths in the flyweight, lightweight and middleweight classes in China.
Women’s boxing will make its Olympic debut in these three weight categories in London.
