Athlone heavyweight Kenny Okungbowa had to settle for bronze today at the World University Championships in Thailand.

The AIT big man had guaranteed bronze in Chiang Mai on Tuesday following a win over Lithuanian Tadas Tamasauskas, but was overcome in today’s semi finals.

The Midlander was defeated by Frenchman Dylan Bregeon, a bronze medalist at the 2013 Universiade, in the last four. The cleaner style of the Nantes boxing caught the eye of the judges who unanimously awarded him the bout after a brawl.

Ireland’s five-strong team depart South East Asia with two bronze medals, Okungbowa and Christina Desmond, a best ever performance at the championships.
