Noely Murphy ready for “the Test” following frustrating Dublin win

Noely Murphy [12(2)-0] wants to be let off the leash.

The Cork welterweight was left frustrated following his maiden headline appearance on Saturday night and now wants to take ‘the test.’

As an occasion, it was special – but the fight was not to Murphy’s liking.

The Macroom man outpointed Gyorgy Mizsei Jr over eight rounds, outworking the tricky former EU champion and claiming a 79-73 win.

A crafty foe, the Hungarian sought to spoil rather than compete, leaving the hungry Murphy clamouring for a step up afterwards.

Analysing his performance with Irish-Boxing.com, Murphy described how it was “not good, good at all, but that’s what happens when you’re fighting those kind of journeymen who want to spoil you. They don’t really come to fight, but we got the win anyway.”

“It was very frustrating, and in the last round there I think I showed it. He wouldn’t let me work inside and he didn’t want to work inside, that was very frustrating. But I have to learn to deal with that.”

“It was a messy fight, but we got the win and that’s the main thing. You have to come along with these guys and deal with them, that’s the main thing.”

While he wasn’t happy with what went on inside the ring, Murphy was blown away by what went on outside it. Huge numbers made their way up from the Rebel County and made constant noise throughout the fight.

23 year old New York-based Murphy certainly enjoys fighting back at home and stated that “it was brilliant, sure you could see the crowd there, it was unbelievable. It’s surreal to be honest, sometimes you have to remember you’re in a fight, it’s brilliant.”

“I’ve never seen an atmosphere there like it and that was the second fight in a few months and the crowd still came up from Cork and Macroom, it was bigger than the last one. I’m delighted.”

It’s been a brilliant year for Murphy with five fights and 38 rounds in the bag. His apprenticeship well and truly served, Murphy is looking forward to a big fight next time he steps through the ropes.

Murphy outlined how “February or March will be the ‘test’ as I’m calling it. That’s where I’ll see what I’m made of. I’ve been ready for it for a while, I feel.”

“I’m there, mentally, and I’m sparring the best in New York, world class fighters, and I think I’m ready.”

“I’m only waiting for it. These lads are only holding me back at this stage. We’ll see what Lou DiBella has next and we’ll go from there.”
