Noely Murphy hoping for big opportunity following John Joyce win

Noely Murphy [13(2)-1(0)-1] is hoping for something as big as John Joyce’s heart after returning to winning ways in Boston on Saturday gone.

The New York-based Cork man put an agonising defeat to recent world title challenger Mikkel LesPierre and a somewhat lacklustre draw behind him with decisive victory in an all-Ireland clash on a Murphys Boxing card that also hosted Spike O’Sullivan and Niall Kennedy victories.

The 24 year old, who out pointed Dublin’s Joyce, now wants ‘something big’ next as he eyes a return to title or big name action.

“Hopefully I get something big next, me and Kevin [Crowley, manager] are just waiting for the dust to settle a bit and go from there,” Murphy told Irish-boxing.com.

While he is hoping for something sizable next, he admits he encountered something ‘big’ during his Boston debut.

Having dropped Lucan native Joyce [7(4)-1(0)] heavily in the opening stanza and hurting him at various stages in the second round, Murphy was shocked with how the solider stayed in there and fought down the stretch.

“I was happy enough with my performance I boxed well, of course there’s a lot to work on but overall I’m delighted with the win.”

“I thought the fight would have been stopped, the referee was very lenient as Joyce seemed unsteady on his legs for two rounds but, fuck, has he got a big heart!”

“I’ve huge respect for him after it he took a lot of big shots and kept coming back with shots of his own”

“We had a chat after, John is sound. We just thanked each other for the fight really!”

It was somewhat surprisingly the Woodlawn-based fighter’s first Boston bout and he enjoyed the atmosphere.

“Boston was a brilliant place to fight, my favourite beside home. They really go all out for Paddy’s weekend and they seemed to enjoy our fight which was great.”
