‘No Hiding on our Part’ – Hogan misses out on world title fight on GGG-Canelo card

Patience is virtue Dennis Hogan [27(7)-1(0)-1] will have show once again.

The WBO light middleweight #1 contender was hopeful of challenging champion Jaime Munguia [30(25)-0] for his strap on the massive September 15th Gennady Golovkin Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez undercard.

The Mexican, noted for being huge at the weight, earned a voluntary defence after he defeated Liverpool’s Liam Smith as recent as last month, but Hogan’s promoters DDP Promotions made it clear their man was willing to step up and challenge in Las Vegas.

However, it appears the 21-year-old champion will defend against ‘Bad Boy’ Brandon Cook on an undercard that looks set to host a mouthwatering Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan v David Lemiuex war.

The 32-year-old Canadian is currently ranked #4 by the WBO and according to ‘The Hurricane’ Golden Boy have chosen him to man the away corner on one of the most eagerly anticipated fight nights of the year.

The Australian based Kildare native took to social media today to explain the situation.

“I thought I would update everyone on here what is happening due to the amount of messages.

“It looks like the champion Jaime Munguia will use his voluntary defence to fight world #4 Brandon Cook,” said Hogan before claiming he would provided the champ with a better test and the card a more entertaining fight.

“While I respect their decision I believe a fight between us would have been better.

“I am still the number 1 contender for his title.Myself and my team have publicly stated we want this fight so there is no hiding on our part.

“I want to thank my team for tirelessly putting in the effort behind the scenes I couldn’t be happier with my whole team right now. I won’t wait around for Munguia to call us I am an active fighter and I want to fight so we are working on my next move now.”

“The champ has to fight me sooner rather than later. Thanks everyone in Ireland and Australia for all the support it means the world to me.”

DDP Promotions Paul Keegan told Irish-boxing.com last week that if the fight didn’t materailse Hogan would look elsewhere for a bout and should appear in Australia over the coming months.

It’s disappointing for the mandatory challenger who has done all he can to secure his shot.

Having worked his way up the rankings after a WBA interim title defeat in German to Jack Culcay back in 2015 the driven 33 year old thought he would challenge Liam Smith for a vacant title early this year.

The thought process was Miguel Cotto would defeat Sadam Ali in his last ever fight and as the highest ranked light middles with the WBO the Kildare man and the Liverpool native would trade leather for the vacant strap. However, Ali threw a serious spanner in the works by ruining Cotto’s send off.

The former Australian champion then tried to cement his status as most genuine contender by fighting and defeating two top 10 fighters in Yuki Nonaka and Jimmy Kelly, but had to watch on as former champion Smith got a tilt at Munguia.

It seems Hogan will have to show patience again, but as mandatory he does so in the knowledge he can’t be denied much longer.
