Next fight CONFIRMED for Mick Conlan

Mick Conlan‘s next fight date has tonight been confirmed.

The Belfast featherweight announced on social media this evening that he will headline a card at the Theater at Madison Square Garden for the third St Patrick’s Day running.

March 17th falls on a Sunday this year but Conlan [10(6)-0] will still fight on the date despite this.

His fight with a to-be-confirmed foe looks to be a co-headline bout with former gym-mate and super bantam champ Jessie Magdaleno’s clash with recent super featherweight title challenger Christopher Diaz. The pair are due to meet over ten at featherweight.

The Sunday fight date had been mooted since Conlan’s win over Jason Cunningham last month and the slot would look to round off a major weekend for Irish boxing on the U.S. East Coast with Jono Carroll and Katie Taylor rumoured to have world title fights in Philadelphia on Friday 15th, while a major card is slated for Boston on Saturday 16th.

Conlan debuted at the famous Felt Forum back in 2017, with Conor McGregor walking him into the ring for the debut St Patrick’s Day clash with Tim Ibarra.

Afterwards promoters Top Rank would claim that they had booked out the venue for a further five years running.

Conlan obliterated David Berna last St Patrick’s Day – a fight which came after a win at the same venue on the Lomachenko-Rigondeaux undercard – before moving upstairs for a slot on the Linares-Lomachenko bill.

Last time out, versus Cunningham at the Manchester Arena, the Falls Road fighter claimed the WBO Inter-Continental title with a dominant points win.

It is not clear whether this belt, which Conlan has oddly not been rewarded with a Top 15 ranking for, will be on the line but the Irishman is scheduled to fight in a ten rounder on the ESPN+-broadcast card.

There has been no indication on who the Olympic bronze medallist and World Amateur champion’s opponent will be. Vladimir Nikitin had been mooted as a possibility but the Russian instead is due to fight on the undercard as a fight during the summer is built toward, potentially at the Féile an Phobhail in West Belfast.

The undercard in just over ten weeks time also features former super bantam champ Jonathan Guzman and light welter Josue Vargas with more assumedly to be announced.
