Newry light heavyweight Conor Wallace turns professional

It has been confirmed this morning that Newry light heavyweight Conor Wallace has turned professional.

The 22-year-old has relocated to Australia for his move into the pro game.

The Ulster champion has linked up with Steve Deller’s Eureka Promotions and will debut on Saturday September 8th on a major show in Bendigo, Victoria.

Wallace makes the move following a successful amateur career in which he won six Irish underage titles and the Intermediates.

After winning the 2015 Intermediates, Wallace finished middleweight runner-up at the 2016 Elite Seniors to Michael O’Reilly.

The southpaw the spent time in Las Vegas for a high-profile role as UFC superstar Conor McGregor’s chief sparring partner for the Nate Diaz rematch.

Wallace fought at the 2016 World University Championships, and dropped Russian Valery Kharlamov in his opening bout only to be forced to retire through injury and see Kharlamov go on to win gold.

The 2017 Irish Elites were missed through injury and Wallace would move up in weight and move from the St Monica’s club in his hometown to Holy Family Drogheda, winning the Ulster Seniors and securing a spot on the Northern Ireland team for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Wallace, however, was deselected from the team for the Games in April and his future in the sport has been up in air since.

This morning he announced that he will start afresh Down Under.

Wallace said that he is “absolutely delighted to announce I have signed a professional contract with Eureka Promotions under the tutelage of Steve Deller.”

“I will be making my pro debut on the 8th of September in Bendigo, Victoria.”

“After gaining a lot of amateur experience both National and International I am very excited about the turn over to the pros.”

“Thank you to be everyone who has helped make this happen. The best has yet to come.”

Wallace makes his debut on a big card at the Bendigo Stadium. Headlined by a super flyweight clash between Andrew Moloney and Luis Concepcion and featuring son of a legend Tim Tszyu, the bill will be shown live on ESPN+.

Wallace will fight in a four rounder on the undercard and will face the experienced Indonesian Aswin Cabuy [19(7)-70(33)-4] who has previously gone the distance with Irish light middleweights Dennis Hogan and Tony Senior.
