National Senior (Intermediate) Championships – FINALS PREVIEW


The National Senior (Intermediate) Championships conclude tomorrow night [Friday November 30th] at the National Stadium in Dublin.

One of the most exciting tournaments in Irish boxing, the championships provide an opportunity to see Elite young stars come through as well as the development of fighters from around the country.

Following previous rounds over the last three weeks, 15 finals in total will be decided at headquarters and Irish-Boxing.com below take a look at the match-ups.

Women’s Light Flyweight – 48kg
Emma Feeney (Virginia) v Courtney Daly (Crumlin)
Runner-up last year, Dubliner Daly will be looking to go one better on Friday. The younger sister of Evan and Aiden Metcalfe boxes Cavan’s Feeney, runner-up in this year’s U22s.

Men’;s Light Flyweight – 49kg
Diarmuid Toland (Holy Family GG) has received the title on a walkover.

Women’s Flyweight – 51kg
Kirsten Cresham (Castlebar) v Caitlin Fryers (Immaculata)
Two fighters stepping up to adult level, Mayo’s Cresham won the Irish Junior 2 title earlier this year while Belfast’s Fryers is extremely decorated with World Youth and European Junior and Youth medals in recent years.

Men’s Flyweight – 52kg
Adam Hession (Monivea) v Terry Donohue (St Michael’s Athy)
Hession was a narrow loser to World Youth bronze medallist Jude Gallagher in the U18s during the summer and has since moved up to fly. Here he faces Donoghue, a European Junior silver medallist and Irish U18 flyweight champion.

Women’s Bantamweight – 54kg
Emma O’Neill (St Nicholas’s) v Lois Walsh (Castlebar)
A runner-up way back in 2014, Galway’s O’Neill is back in the competition for an all-Connacht affair with Mayo’s Walsh – who finished runner-up at flyweight last year.

Men’s Bantamweight – 56kg
Conor Kerr (Monkstown A) v Sean Purcell (Enniskerry)
Ulster Elite runner-up Kerr faces Irish Universities champion and recent World Championships competitor Purcell in a high-quality bantamweight decider.

Women’s Featherweight – 57kg
Shauna Blaney (Navan) has received the title on a walkover.

Men’s Lightweight – 60kg
Patryk Adamus (Drimnagh) v Martin Noonan (Riverstown)
Since finishing runner-up last year, Dubliner Adamus has claimed the Irish U22 title. Tomorrow night he takes on Cork veteran Noonan, an Intermediate runner-up back in 2014.

Women’s Lightweight – 60kg

Men’s Light Welterweight – 64kg
Daniel Kyne (Celtic Eagles) v Senan Kelly (Crumlin)
Kyne, the first of three Eagles finalists, fights Dubliner Kelly, a runner-up at the Haringey Box Cup this summer.

Women’s Light Welterweight – 64kg
Isobella Hughes (Mount Tallant) v Shauna O’Callaghan (Clann Naofa)
Irish Novice champion last year, Huges boxes Irish U18 lightweight champ O’Callaghan, with the Crossmaglen fighter taking a step up in weight.

Men’s Welterweight – 69kg
Jason Kyne (Celtic Eagles) v Patrick Donovan (OLOL)
World Junior silver medallist Donovan has looked sensational so far and the Tokyo 2020 tip faces Kyne – a semi-finalist last time out and, like his brother Daniel, is a Celtic Box Cup and Connacht champion this year.

Women’s Welterweight – 69kg
69kg Clodagh Green (Crumlin) v Caroline Gallagher (Illies GG)
The experienced Greene, an Intermediate B champion back in 2014 goes up against Ulster Novice champion and Donegal GAA player Gallagher.

Men’s Middleweight – 75kg
Christopher Mulligan (Clann Naofa) v Gabriel Dossen (Olympic)
World and European Youth bronze medallist Dossen is another with Tokyo hopes and will be aiming to ready himself for the Seniors next year versus the experienced Mulligan.

Women’s Middleweight – 75kg
Renee Roche (Castlebar) v Lauren Kelly (St Brigid’s Edenderry)
Rhree-time European underage medallist and recent Youth Olympian Kelly is making the step up to senior level and takes on Mayo’s Roche – a runner up at lightweight at U18 level two years ago.

Men’s Light Heavyweight – 81kg
Kevin Kehoe (Marble City) v Tommy Hyde (Mayfield)
Touted Cork prospect Hyde will look to build on his impressive Haringey triumph when he takes on another former strong underage fighter in Kehoe – a semi-finalist in last year’s tournament.

Women’s Light Heavyweight – 81kg

91+kg Gytis Lisinskas (Celtic Eagles) v Dean Scullion (Loughshore)
Top kickboxer Lisinskas faces off against reigning Irish Novice champion Scullion in a battle of the big men to round off the night’s action.
