National Elite Senior Championships – Day 1 Fixtures

The National Elite Senior Championships begin tonight in just a few hours time.

Men’s quarter-finals are on the agenda at the National Stadium

It has emerged today that two walkovers have been ceded, and Thomas McCarthy and Adam Kelly will go straight into the semis at bantamweight and lightweight respectively following the withdrawals of Eamonn McNally and Yannick Meseke respectively

There are plenty of exciting fights on the agenda. At lightweight there is a guaranteed war between Commonwealth bronze medalist Sean Duffy and Frankie Cleary, while defending champion Pat Mongan has a very tough opening fight against tricky U22 champion Dylan Duffy.

There will be a lot of interested observers when Kieran Molloy steps into the ring against Fergal Redmond. The teenage Oughterard welter won Feliks Stamm silver last year and many are tipping him to win these championships.

The super heavyweight quarters also offer up some tantalising match-ups. Runner-up for 2016 and 2017, Thomas Carty rematches Dean Gardiner in a repeat of their 2016 final, while the Dubliner’s clubmate Geoffrey Kavanagh will look to exert some Glasnevin revenge against reigning champion Martin Keenan.

The action begins at 7:00pm
