National Under-18 Championships Finals – RESULTS + REPORT

The National Under-18 Championships drew to a close tonight in Dublin with a session of some top-quality boxing.

19 new champions were crowned at the Natonal Stadium with 16 fights taking place at headquarters.

Double European gold medalist Daina Moorehouse opened proceedings impressively, setting herself up for next month’s World Youth Championships in Hungary with a win over Ciara Walsh.

Also on the plane to Budapest, European Youth bronze medalist Jude Gallagher and World Youth silver medalist Caitlin Fryers overcame spirited displays from Adam Hession and Jessica Clarke at light fly and flyweight respectively, both winning on 4-1 splits.

Last year’s light fly champion, Terry Donoghue, bounced back from elimination at the Irish Open earlier this year to take top prize here versus Danny Duffy – with a similar scenario occuring for David Oliver Joyce – the undoubted Fighter of the Night – at lightweight versus James Power.

Catherine Blaney stepped up in weight to bantam to pick up another championship against Megan Coleman, while Aoibhe Ginty stepped down to feather but was retired at the end of the opening round of her final as Zara Breslin claimed a first Irish title.

Another heading to the World Youths, bantam Brandon McCarthy looked stylish en-route to defeating long-time rival Killian Geraghty.

World bronze medalist Katelynn Phelan went up against European bronze winner Evelyn Igharo in the fight of the night – Igharo winning the first two at range before withstanding a huge final round from Phelan to take the win and the light welter crown.

Igharo’s win made it a double for Clann Naofa versus St Brigid’s Kildare, with Shauna O’Callaghan having edged Marguerita Nevin just minutes earlier.

The World Championships-bound European Junior champion Callum Walsh barely left first gear as he scored a classy win over Eric Byrne at light welter while Nadine Dermody was a destructive winner over Shauna Brogan at welter.

Rangey Mullingar welter David McDonagh kept Christian Preston at bay for the majority of their clash and there was another boxer versus puncher-style final at middleweight, with Adam Matthews boxing clever to defeat Martin Sweeney and claim his first Irish title.

Going up to the big boys, Youth Commonwealth silver medalist Kane Tucker stepped up to light heavy and overcame Jack Lawlor in an entertaining final – a repeat of the Irish Open middleweight final.

Finally, there was a win for Edward McDonagh after a fiery heavyweight slugfest with Pierre Stokes.

Naoise Finney, Owney McDonagh, and European Junior champion Aoibhe Carrabine all won their titles via walkover.
