No U.S. adjustment needed for Mick Conlan ahead of Stateside return

Mick Conlan [8(5)-0] will fight in America next but doesn’t anticipate any major readjustments following his epic homecoming.

Back in June, Conlan fought in his home city of Belfast for the first time, defeating recent world title challenger Adeilson Dos Santos in front of an incredible atmosphere at the SSE Odyssey Arena.

The featherweight, who recently celebrated the birth of his second child, Mick Jr, is at the beginnings of camp and will soon link up again with coach Adam Booth in London.

Next up looks likely to be an appearance on a Top Rank card in Las Vegas on Saturday October 20th before a return to New York and Madison Square Garden on December 8th.

These fight nights will no doubt be different to the special Belfast homecoming but this is no problem for the Olympic bronze medallist.

Conlan explained how “it’s not going to be hard to adjust to going back to the States. I boxed all around the world as an amateur.”

“Back then I saw the full spectrum. I boxed in the Olympics and then in much smaller competitions with hardly anyone there. I know how to adjust.”

“Venues, atmospheres – they all change. This game is a business and a lot of my business is going to be based in the US. It’s a different feeling to boxing in Belfast.”

The Falls Road fighter already has improvements in mind ahead of his next fight date after what he describes as a C-minus performance versus Dos Santos.

The self-critical Conlan outlined how “looking back on my last fight, as always, I’m critical of myself. I would have liked to have got him out of there but we worked on some new things, which was good.”

“This kind of performance will set me up for the bigger fights. I wanted to set my feet more and throw harder shots but I was able to do my new things in a real fight against a proper opponent.”
