Mick Conlan to fight for first title on Carl Frampton card

Mick Conlan will look to move to 10-0 before the end of the year and will do so on a card featuring another Belfast featherweight.

Following his win over Nicola Cipolletta in Las Vegas last night it was confirmed that Conlan [9(6)-0] will box on the undercard of the Josh Warrington v Carl Frampton IBF world title fight at the Manchester Arena on Saturday December 22nd.

The Falls Road switch-hitter revealed the news to Irish boxing journalist Dave Mohan, also confirming that he will fight for his maiden career title on the bill.

Following four eight-round fights, Conlan will face a to-be-confirmed foe for a to-be-confirmed belt on the BT Sport-broadcast bill which will be shown on ESPN+ in America.

The announcement shows further co-operation between Queensberry and Conlan’s promoter Top Rank – with Frank Warren having put on the Belfast man’s homecoming at the SSE Odyssey Arena during the Summer.

The Olympic bronze medallist had seemed set to fight at Madison Square Garden for a fifth time on the Vasyl Lomachenko v Jose Pedraza lightweight unification card on December 8th but will now instead box closer to home on a card of great Irish interest.

Conlan’s title fight will feature on the undercard alongside the light middleweight clash between Liam Williams and JJ Metcalf, and alongside appearances from Mark Heffron, Nicola Adams, and Nathan Gorman, with more to be announced in the near future.

Last night, the 26-year-old scored a seventh-round stoppage of former Italian champion Cipolletta, dominating at the Mandalay Bay and forcing the referee to wave the contest off with his opponent offering nothing in return to the constant Conlan attacks.
