Michaela Walsh wins second Commonwealth medal with dominant stoppage

Michaela Walsh secured Irish boxing’ second medal of the Commonwealth Games early this morning Down Under.

A silver medalist at flyweight last time out in Glasgow, Walsh guaranteed featherweight bronze on the Gold Coast with a quarter-final stoppage win.

The Monkstown puncher destroyed Botswana’s Keamogetse Kenosi, forcing a total of four counts before the bout was waved off in the third round.

The EU bantamweight gold medalist will now meet Kiwi Alexis Pritchard on Friday at 9:30am in the semi-finals. The New Zealander defeated Sri Lankan Keshani Hansika this morning on a unanimous decision.

Making his major debut, there was no joy for Dee Sullivan as the Emerald heavyweight crashed out in the heavyweight quarter-finals.

The Belfast big man dropped a 4-1 split decision to home favourite Jason Whately – a second round count proving crucial – but certainly gave the Aussie a big scare.

Northern Ireland go for three more medals this morning. At 9:30am Kurt Walker aims bantamweight bronze versus Moroke Mokhotho of Lesotho. At 10:45am Aidan Walsh takes on Kiwi Leroy Hindley in the welterweight quarters, and then, finally, after midday, Stephen McMonagle fights for super heavy bronze against Kiwi Patrick Mailata.

All times are Irish time. The Gold Coast is nine hours ahead.
