Michaela Walsh and Amy Broadhurst score big wins at Women’s World Championships

ia
Michaela Walsh and Amy Broadhurst continued Ireland’s incredible start at the Women’s Elite World Championships in New Delhi this afternoon.

Both were in Round of 32 action in India and scored split-decision wins to progress and make it five wins from five.

Belfast feather Walsh defeated Romanian veteran Lacramiora Perijoc on a split – although the rangy Monkstown fighter looked to have controlled the vast majority of the contest.

Walsh will now face Italian world champion Alessia Mesiano in the Last 16 – who she sensationally beat en-route to European bronze earlier this year

Dundalk light welter Broadhurst made a sensational start versus Russian European bronze medallist and fellow former underage star Ekaterina Dynnik, landing numerous long southpaw lefts. The Russian came back into the bout in the second, dragging the Europeam U22 champion into a war.

Broadhurst slowed the pace in the third, boxing well at range and it would be enough for the Irishwoman who claimed a 4-1 split and will face Armenian Ani Hovsepyan on Monday.

Earlier today, in the morning session, Ireland scored two wins from two.

Cavan flyweight Céire Smith and Roscommon middleweight Aoife O’Rourke both won their Round of 32 bouts.

Smith edged Bulgarian Gabriela Dimitrova while O’Rourk dominated Taiwanese fighter Yang Ya Chu.

Both box in the Last 16 on Monday.

Two Irish are in action tomorrow in the Last 16.

Dublin lightweight Kelly Harrington faces legendary home favourite Sarita Devi while Offaly welter Gráinne Walsh boxes double Panamerica gold medallist Noella Perez of Argentina.
