Michael Conlan tells Bob Arum Carl Frampton fight won’t be happening

Michael Conlan confirmed he will never fight Carl Frampton.

Not long after the Belfast fighters stoppage victory over Alberto Ruiz on the top of a successful Top Rank event at Féile an Phobail legendary promoter Bob Arum was telling BT Sports that he wanted to pitch his two Belfast feathers against each other.

It’s something that Conlan was happy to put out there when he first turned over full of confidence and with an obvious want to be Irish boxing’s leading man.

As expected  Frampton, who hopes to set up another world title fight with victory in Philadelphia next week,  was never going to  back down from the challenge, but did suggest he may be retired or the pair may be at different weights by the time the Olympic medal winner reached his level.

However, since the duo became managerial stablemates, Conlan has retracted any call out.

Not only have the pair rekindled a friendship and got a lot closer, but Conlan claims such a fight wouldn’t be good for the city of Belfast.

That has been the line now for at least a year, but Conlan was forced to trot it out again on a night were he was determined to live in the moment rather than look at any future fights.

Arum got people talking and sparked some Twitter debate when he told BT Sport:

“I am not a puppet master that moves all of these people. They all have a say on who they want to fight and who they are ready to fight. Now I don’t know what the politics are and so fort, but obviously if we did a Conlan Frampton fight it would be huge. It would pull in five times the people.”

The comments from the long time promoter, who flew in from America to take the card in from ringside, were put to the main event winner in the post fight press conference- and he was quick to pour cold water on the idea.

“I can put that to bed. That’s not happening. Me and Carl are friends and it wouldn’t be good for the city. It isn’t happening.”
