McGuigan: Win and Conlan will be set for British title shot

IF JAMIE Conlan impresses against Hungarian champion Gabor Molnar in Belfast this Friday night he could finally get the British title tilt that has eluded him over the years, according to Barry McGuigan.

Cyclone Promotions have been pushing the No.1 ranked fighters case to the British Boxing Board of Control and have expressed nigh on disgust that the popular Belfast super flyweight has yet to challenge for the title.

The super flyweight domestic strap is now vacant, as former champion Paul Butler moved up to bantamweight to claim the IBF World title and McGuigan hopes to secure a British title for Conlan on the massive Frampton Martinez II September 6 card.

However, the Cyclone Promotions CEO warns ‘The Mexican’ he must perform this coming Friday to ensure he secures that prestigious title shot.

“If we get everything right on Friday we can push for a British title,” said McGuigan.

“We have been pushing the board very hard because this kid deserves a British title fight. I am really cross that he hasn’t had a chance by now. The title is vacant, Butler has gone up in weight and won a World bantamweight title so the title is vacant. We have staked our claim months ago.

“Jake (McGuigan) has been hounding them asking ‘what is going on?’. So we are trying to make that for September, but he has to perform on Friday. It is not just about winning it is about looking good. I want these guys to be exciting and to grab peoples attention.”

And McGuigan is confident the WBO European champion will indeed perform and predicts a stoppage win for the Breen’s Gyms fighter.

“Molnar will be lucky to last seven or eight rounds with Jamie.Jamie will be better because he is active and he is the kind of kid that responds to regular fights. He will be sharper and John said he has been looking great in the gym.”
