McEntee progresses to European Junior Championship semi final

Terry McEntee showed his class to advance to the last-eight of the European Junior Championships today, but Brett McGinty and James Clarke bowed out in Anapa, Russia.

McEntee produced a terrific performance to almost completely dominate his bout with Italy’s Alessionde Leonardis.

The Irish pin weight threw about 75% of the punches in this contest and consistently found the target with body and head shots off both hands.

Brett McGinty can consider himself very unlucky to go out of the tournament to Croatian southpaw Mladen Sobjeslavski. McGinty, who staggered his rangy opponent back into a neutral corner in the second, landed the majority of cleaner shots in this contest and constantly took the fight to Sobjeslavski throughout the tree rounds.

“We’re very disappointed with that decision. We thought that Brett did more than enough,” said Billy McClean, who is working Ireland’s corner with Ger McDaid in Anapa.

James Clarke was involved in a tough three rounder with Nikoloz Begadze. Clarke had some good moments in this contest, particularly in the second, but the talented Georgian southpaw got the decision.

“The Georgian was strong but James gave it everything. Terry showed real qualify today and we’re ecstatic with his performance,” added Billy McClean.

Shane Flavin (2) and Blaine O’Brien (5th) will be between the ropes in the evening session. Boxing begins at 3pm (Irish time). Bout numbers for Irish boxers and opponents in brackets.
