Mayweather v McGregor fails to break gate receipt record

The gate receipts for Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor have been officially confirmed and, while they are massive, they are not record-breaking.

Dubliner McGregor [0-1(1)] made his professional debut last month against five-weight champion Mayweather [50(27)-0] at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, eventually being stopped in the tenth round of the mega event.

Today the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed the attendance for for the August 26th bout and the takings at the gate.

Gate receipts grossed $55,414,865.79 with 13,094 tickets sold and a further 139 complimentary tickets being handed out.

The totals see it enter at the #2 spot in boxing history, with Mayweather’s 2015 clash with Manny Pacquiao remaining at number one.

That fight, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, grossed $72,198,500 from 16,219 sold tickets.

#3 on the list currently is Mayweather v Canelo Alvarez in 2013 which brought in $20,003,150 at the MGM, however the middleweight title clash between Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile next week is expected to clear $30million.

Mayweather v McGregor did not sell out the 20,000 seater venue, which was configured to hold 17,698 on the night, with high ticket prices being cited as the reason behind this. Indeed thousands of travelling Irish fans instead paid comparatively lower sums to watch the clash on big screens in casinos.

The figures released today are also at odds with the claims of Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe who stated on August 11th that gate receipts were already at $60million, and UFC President Dana White who said on August 24th that $70million had been taken in.

Pay-per-view numbers are expected very soon, and these are apparently close to breaking that record set by Mayweather v Pacquiao.
